PTFE was discovered by Roy Plunkett, who was working at Kinetic Chemicals at the time, in 1938 by coincidence. PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is a synthetic fluoropolymer with a wide range of applications. The best-known commercial brand based on PTFE is Teflon, produced by DuPont.
Application Areas
Due to its excellent dielectric properties, it is widely used in cable manufacturing for aerospace and computer technologies. It is used in fuel and hydraulic lines due to its very low fluid resistance, in the manufacturing of seals and gaskets for shafts, pumps, and valves due to its low friction resistance, and in the production of gear-like parts due to its non-stick properties.
